The NDS Point of Deployment (POD) solution guarantees the security of digital services while enabling subscribers to purchase the STB model they desire. Developed for the U.S. cable market, OpenCable™ PODs are removable, replaceable modules which encapsulate conditional access and security functionality. The POD is a self-contained unit. This business model opens up the STB market to competition, enabling subscribers to purchase the STB with the features and price that suits them. A subscriber who moves to a different area and switches service providers only needs to replace the POD, not the entire STB.

NDS, working with SCM Microsystems, was the first security vendor to demonstrate an OpenCable™ POD module. Rather than embed all security and conditional access functions in the POD, NDS prefers to use secure and easily replaceable viewing cards. Therefore, NDS PODs include a viewing card slot, and work with a standard NDS viewing card to provide additional security and conditional access features.

NDS PODs offer easily renewable, removable security which supports embedded copy protection. The PODs include a standard interface to TVs, STBs, and PCs, and support simultaneous video, audio, data, webcasting, and interactive services
