Free to air channels will continue to broadcast but from midnight tonight ITV pay TV channels will cease broadcasting. Van SKYnews.co.uk : ITV Digital: Wednesday Switch-Off All pay TV services on the struggling ITV Digital platform are due to cease from 7am tomorrow, signalling the axe for 1,300 workers. The remaining free channels, including ITV1 and BBC services, will continue in the "short term", says the company's administrator. Administrator Deloitte and Touche said there had been "insufficient interest from prospective purchasers to justify continuation of the operation". Cutbacks Hundreds of call centre staff are set to be laid off after the stricken broadcaster loses its premium channels. The cutbacks are expected to include 900 jobs at Pembroke in west Wales, and 400 in Plymouth, Devon. The halting of the pay TV services means ITV Digital will be in breach of its licence conditions. Sky, which provides 25 per cent of the output, has said it will pull the plug if it is not paid by midnight. Liquidation It means subscribers will be left with just a handful of free-to-air channels provided by ITV and the BBC. The news is the latest blow to the beleaguered service which many commentators are predicting will eventually go into liquidation and have its assets sold off. The Independent Television Commission later confirmed it would re-advertise ITV Digital's broadcasting licences. The news came as the company's website disappeared off the Internet. The financial state of ITV Digital has already caused controversy after it tried to re-negotiate its deal with the Football League to pay less for its coverage rights. Nationwide League clubs say their future could be threatened if ITV Digital owners Carlton and Granada do not meet their contract payments.
