D2500CC maar een core zichtbaar

Beste allemaal,

 

Al langere tijd heb ik een D2500CC moederbord van Intel ( dual core atom board met twee gbit interfaces ). Tot heden heb ik deze gebruikt voor niet processor intensieve toepassingen. Sinds kort draai ik PFSense en loopt mijn internetverkeer over een VPN tunnel naar een OpenVPN provider. Aan zich werkt het goed, maar van mijn 100 mbit blijft maar 20 mbit over. Na wat zoeken zag ik dat de processor op 100% liep, dus de bottle neck.

 

Het valt hierbij op dat Ubuntu (14.04LTS 32bit) maar een processor ziet, met een core. Het moederbord is voorzien van een processor met 2 cores ( geen hyperthreading mogelijk ). Zie onderstaande

Hoe kan ik Ubuntu wijsmaken dat er toch echt twee cores zijn en dat deze ook benut worden ?

Altijd lastig als je met je firewall zit te klooien, je hebt meestal geen 'tijdelijke spare'.

BIOS update wil dit soort dingen ook wel eens verhelpen, maar denk dat jij al de laatste hebt als je weet hoe je PFsense moet configuren.

 

Geen idee of het kan, maar je zou er ook VMWare ESXi op kunnen zetten, met twee PFSense VM's (eentje actief, andere backup bij onderhoud).

Hoe je niet zo moeilijk te doen bij het opnieuw opzetten van de server, kwestie van nieuwe VM aanmaken.

op een atom boardje? Je hebt nu al last van te weinig cpu power, ik denk niet dat het gaat helpen om er eerst nog een hypervisor tussen te zetten.

Ik draai PFSense in een "gewone" virtual machine ( VMWare Workstation 10.0.3 ) binnen Ubuntu, buiten PFSense draait nog OSCAM, TVHeadend, file sharing / printer sharing (zonder VM). Bij "normaal" gebruik, dus zonder te downloaden zit ik op een 20-25% load op de processor. Enkel de encryptie van OpenVPN belast de processor tot 100%. Omdat Ubuntu maar een processor ziet ( een core dan ) kan de VM ook niet van meer gebruik maken, het probleem ligt echt in Ubuntu.

Zou de goede moeten zijn, SMP geeft aan dat hij voor meerdere cpu's/cores geschikt is.

Wat geeft: cat /proc/cmdline

 

En je zou ook in de /var/log eens in de logfiles kunnen kijken, iets van dmesg.log of boot.log, misschien valt daar uit te halen waarom er maar 1 core gebruikt wordt.

@Wiz, mr|repel gebruikt nu ubuntu als 'hypervisor', die heeft veel meer overhead dan de ESXi hypervisor... dus de suggestie was nog niet zo vreemd.

Heb geen ervaring met VMWare workstation, wel ESXi. Heb je de VMWare tools geïnstalleerd, en gebruik je de vmxnet3 drivers voor de virtuele netwerk-kaarten? Kan nog iets schelen qua performance. Zie ook https://calvin.me/part-4-install-pfsense-esxi-5-5/

 

Scheelt een her-installatie van Ubuntu 64 bit, Vmware workstation met PFSense, Oscam, TVHeadend, filesharing... pfff ik begrijp je bezwaar tegen een herinstallatie...

BIOS is dus wel actueel? Kan zijn dat een BIOS update verhelpt dat de Ubuntu 32 bit met opstarten maar één core ziet.

De performance ligt niet aan de netwerkkaarten of de software hiervan. Zonder OpenVPN zit ik aan een load van 80% bij maximale throughput ( 100 mbit up / 100 mbit down ). Als bijlage een overzicht van de gemiddelde load op de processor:

VMWare tools zijn geinstalleerd, alsmede een "actuele" bios. Zoals aangegeven, het zaakje werkt wel, alleen ik mis de performance bij OpenVPN mbt rekenkracht en maximaal downloaden, hetgeen sporadisch voorkomt. Daarom wil ik de tweede core kunnen aanspreken om hier in mee te werken.

Zie er voor zover ik kan beoordelen niets vreemds aan behalve dat hij maar 1 CPU detecteert.

Ik weet niet of dat in de BIOS is in te stellen voor dat mainboard, maar staan alle cores wel aan?

Wat ik ook wel eens tegengekomen ben is dat de 2de core alleen werd herkend als alle USB apparaten afgekoppeld zijn, dus PC uit, USB kabels eruit, dan PC starten en daarna kan je de USB kabels weer aansluiten.
