Ik heb 4 2TB disks in een FreeNAS machine.

 

Daar doen de schijven vreemd, maar FreeNAS geeft geen duidelijke meldingen en van de SMART meldingen zijn ook niet 100% eenduidig.

 

Welke van de 4 disks doet/doen vreemd en wat denk je dat de status is van de disk?

Vervangen of filesystem checken?

Disk 2 en 4 geven read errors. Zou beginnen met een file-check. Als toevallig via RAID disk 1/2 en 3/4 gekoppeld zijn heb je nog redundancy op de 2 goede disks. Blijft de fout dan is het zaak om disk 2 en disk 4 te gaan vervangen..

wat voor een filesystem draai je op deze disks? zfs toevallig? Ik zou eerst zorgen voor een backup en dan eens beginnen met een filesystem check. Ik zou nog even niets vervangen.

 

Is dit een raid setje?

Waar baseer je dat op, immers de smart geeft op alle 4 de discen aan: no errors logged.

Disk 2 en 4 hebben Offline_Uncorrectable errors en dat is nooit een goede zaak en dient in de gaten gehouden te worden. Als deze waarde groeit is het zaak om snel aan vervanging te gaan denken.

 

De rest ziet er niet verontrustend uit.

Iedere disc heeft toch een partij reserve blockjes om die bad sectors mee te compenseren.

Ik zie 8 staan.... lijkt me nog niet spannend zolang het idd niet in een week tijd tot 100 groeit.

 

De tijd is geweest dat iemand jankend bij de balie stond omdat zijn nieuwe 20 Mb ST-225 maar liefst 4 bad blocks bleek te hebben :)

 

Het is toch niet een kwestie dat de discs te warm worden omdat ze onvoldoende gekoeld bovenop elkaar gestacked zijn?

Ik heb ook al issues met raidcontrollers gezien doordat de disc firmware niet lekker samenwerkte met bepaalde types raidcontrollers (als ik me goed herinner WD Green modellen)

(Disclaimer: heb geen ervaring met FreeNAS, wel met handmatige RAID configs op linux, met LVM en met Synology SHR)

 

DIsk 2 en 4 zijn verdacht vanwege de read failures in de logfile, consistent op dezelfde LBA locatie op de schijf. (was al gemeld).

De bad blocks zijn niet meer leesbaar, dus de schijf gebruikt dus blocks uit de reserve pool, klopt. Maar de oorspronkelijke data die in de bad blocks stond is wel foetsie, dus daardoor raakt het filesysteem mogelijk corrupt. Dus moet je een filesystem check of RAID consistency check doen.

Zorg dat je een backup hebt voordat je dit start.

 

Bad blocks zijn meestal toch een slecht teken over de betrouwbaarheid van de schijf. (en reden voor fabrikanten om de schijf onder garantie te vervangen)

Inmiddels gebruik in in mijn Synology systemen een regime van een wekelijkse lange SMART tests en een maandelijkse volume zelftest met een berichtje wanneer het fout zit. Simpel in te stellen via de web interface. Wellicht heeft FreeNAS ook zo'n optie.

PS Schijven zijn best goed bestendig tegen warmte, en RAID achtige errors vanwege ruzie tussen de controller en de disken kom je meestal al snel tegen na de bouw van je systeem. (omdat je meestal na de bouw het RAID systeem vol gaat stoppen met data en het dus meteen flink belast)
